Leftfooters FC v Leicester Wildecats
Saturday 2nd April 2005
Regents Park

A record win for Leftfooters on Saturday, meaning that this season we've managed to pull together more points than the last two seasons combined. All this achieved without a hint of sobriety.

Leicester were only able to bring a small squad to London, but all of their players were of a very respectable standard, with the skills of Gareth, Steve, Jeremy and Geoff being ably assisted by the pace of Michael and JP, all of whom caused us problems throughout the game.

The first half was very tight, with Leftfooters being the first to suffer from a strong wind that made goal kicks difficult for even the best of keepers, with Thierry coping well. The first few minutes saw Leftfooters attacks, followed by a period of sustained pressure by Leicester on the Leftfooters goal, but the Leftfooters defence stood firm. Towards the end of the first half, Leftfooters pushed forward on a break, with Michael Collins scoring the first goal of the game, scoring from an acute angle.

In the second half, Leftfooters made some changes. And some more changes. Anthony showed how he was a tactical genius, confusing the Leicester players with frequent substitutions to make sure that all Leftfooters got a decent
amount of time on the pitch.

And it worked. Thierry kicked a long ball out to Dave, who scored his first goal for Leftfooters, a very well taken run on the Leicester keeper. The goals continued with Dave setting up Albie, to make it three-nil to Leftfooters, and then Morten crossing to Steve for him to score a fantastic diving header for the Leftfooters fourth goal.

To be fair, Leicester didn't give up, counterattacking during the second half. They were unlucky not to be awarded at least one penalty, when Morten decided that his hands were the only way of protecting his nipples (and what nice nipples they are) from a free-kick from Gareth. Fortunately for us, Jason the referee thought Morten was just being gay and didn't spot the "technical" infringement.

Final score, 4-0 to Leftfooters, our best ever 11-a-side result. A good team effort, with everyone playing well and an extremely respectable debut by Trev and a notable clean sheet by Thierry and his defence.

Best of all was the spirit in which the game was played. Leicester were by far the most friendly football team to play us this season, gracious in defeat, with not even a hint of foul play or bad attitude during the game. JP, Michael, Steve and Jeremy all came to join in our kickabouts on Sunday afternoon too. All of their players came to the Black Cap afterwards to socialise, showing that, just like us, the football is only a small distraction from alcohol consumption. We can only hope that Bristol might show the same attitude in three weeks' time when they visit us.

Well done to Richy for organising and special thanks to Jason for coming all the way from Cardiff to referee.

Mike.
