Gay and Lesbian Recreational Football for London

GFSN National League 2005/06
Leftfooters FC v Leicester Wildecats
Sunday 18th December
Pitch 8, Regents Park

The training session on the Saturday turned out be a bit of a mixed bunch at the Duke of Wellington, where a small number of Wildecats and ‘Footers turned out to join a depleted Stonewall Christmas party (they really should learn that double figure defeats are something to be proud of). Drinks flowed; match day programmes distributed and predictions for the game were at the back of everyone’s mind as people moved on to Trash Palace for extra time and night buses.

A new record was set for earliest kick off in the GFSN league as Leicester & London took to the pitch at a little after 10.50 in the morning to accommodate the GFSN Christmas party later that afternoon. By ten past 11 the Londoners found themselves 2-0 down; a superb overhead kick by the on fire Dr Hayes made it two in two games for him, the second a scuffed volley by Paul Finney who only 3 months earlier had helped Leftfooters win their first trophy in Leicester – the irony of gay football!! JP made it 3-0 before the break with what has to be said, a superb curler from the left hand corner of the box. London had a few chances to pull the score back a bit but safe hands in the Leicester goal meant that the beautiful passing moves from the boys in red were to be in vain.

In the second half Leftfooters decided to throw all they could at the Wildecats but despite intricate build up play that belied the score line, Leftfooters were kept at bay to the end. Leicester put the match beyond doubt when a beautiful free kick from Tez Connelly flew into the top right hand corner. The only thing to take the shine off the goal was the fact that the London goalkeeper Theo wasn’t allowed an attempt at saving it, as he was wrestled to the ground by Leicester’s Jazz. Boo hiss we say!

After Beena’s sending off against Birmingham, Leftfooters received their second sending off when Michael English got his marching orders for taking a swing at – you guessed it, Jazz from Leicester. Mr English now has to miss the game against Brighton but assures me he will make it up to everyone by winning a goldfish at the circus by punching the boxing bag instead.

So we got beat and Leicester did the double over us as we had done to them the previous season. But I think everyone enjoyed the game – the start was just hilarious, a true Leftfooters moment – and towards the end we played some great attacking football as only we know how when trailing by four goals.

The Christmas party was great fun too with special mentions to Yorkshire who made the journey down to win the quiz and bag best karaoke with Mick Ward’s tartan version of Buck’s Fizz.
A lovely end to 2005
