GFSN National League 2006/07
Leftfooters v Leicester Wildcats
04 February 2007
Regents Park

We set off for Regents park in glorious weather, dragging nets, medical kit and a song in our hearts. Got to the pitch and I stayed on pitch 4 to put up the nets. It was very theraputic to put up the nets while all around you the hurly burly of competitive football ensued. Once erected, I set off to the changing rooms and got changed. I was still somewhat concerned that we didn't have a ref but after a wee bit of discussion with Leicester, we decided a player from each team would ref a half. Pete C said he would ref the first half and we got organised(in true 'Footers fashion) and kicked off. The Leicester squad was very strong and set about putting the 'Footers under pressure and debutante Des was kept very busy in the 'Footers goal. After some good work by Leicester, Wayne headed them in front. Suddenly, like Mr. Ben, a referee appeared from nowhere! A small man(possibly a Hobbit from the nearby Shire) stood in front of Pete and offered to ref for a small fee (a ring of gold, me thinks). So now with a 'proper' ref, Pete took his place in the centre of defence and 'Footers never looked backed. The defence pushed up and attacks were mounted down both wings, seeing Albie thread a great ball to Baldini who, without breaking stride, lobbed the keeper. Debut Des had to be replaced by Oli as he broke his finger during one of his many saves. Now the 'Footers pressed and from a free kick, Silky flighted a great ball into the area. A confused Leicester defence could only look on as Baby Dave slammed the ball across the goal and into the far corner. Leicester now looked edgy and 'Footers kept up the pressure but half time score remained 2-1.

With a certain amount of confidence the 'Footers took to the field for the second half. Leicester tried to push forward which left plenty of space for the'Footers to exploit. From one such counter attack, Leicester gave away a free kick and Gayczar(unfortunately, not in full drag) took and scored from.

Another great goal straight from a free kick. Now the 'Footers sat back and after a wee bit of pressure from Leicester(which saw Gayry in handbags with one of their players.... 'so butch'!), broke and scored another goal. Great passing down the wing saw the ball crossed to the far post, where Mariah had time to hit the post, before slamming the ball home. As expected, Leicester mounted a final onslaught and caused many problems, especially with the introduction of Steve Niblett. But stout defending from the team and outstanding goalkeeping by Oli kept the score 4-1.

Leicester's cause wasn't helped by one of their players on field antics but that is a problem they have to deal with. Today was all about one team playing as a team and the other team, whilst having excellent individual players, not gelling on the day. A perfect example of 'Footers ethics, people playing out of position, showing positive passion and enjoying a thoroughly good game of football on a beautiful day. Also, it gives me a great feeling of pleasure to walk off the pitch and see our fantastic supporters enjoying the win. The support was absolutely fantastic throughout(as always) and it's lovely to hear it and be part of it when on the side. The cheers that followed the fourth goal were deafening, great work guys.

So now onto the last two games of the season. Both away and against title contenders. Let's go and enjoy ourselves and do what 'Footers do best....

F@#k up someone's league title hopes, ha ha!!!

'Ave it !
