GFSN Glasgow 5-a-side Tournament
Glasgow University, Sat 11th June 2005

As I'm sure many of you will have found out by now, Leftfooters had quite a weekend - doing well both on the pitch and elsewhere. We were blessed with gorgeous weather the whole weekend and some of our group even suffered a bit from sunburn - who would've thought it from Scotland?

On arrival in sunny sunny Glasgow on Friday afternoon, groups of us set about discovering what the city had to offer in the way of culture & leisure. Richy & I opted for Haggis before he leapt onto an open-top bus tour while Pete had an egg sandwich and we went of in search of more beer.

The Friday night get together took place at The Polo Lounge, a really very swish venue that provided the perfect place to catch up with other GFSNers from around the country. What followed was a medley of drink/dance shenanigans with perhaps a bit of hotel boisterousness and general hiding of the

The tournament took itself was very well organised and played on artificial grass rather than Astroturf which certainly saved a few skin grafts. The set up was two groups of 5 teams with the top 2 from each going through to play for the Shield & the remaining teams playing-off for the inaugural GFSN Vase. After each London team had suffered a defeat in their opening game, they started to look a bit more confident and pick up some good results, playing with the all the tenacity and will you'd expect from a group who didn't realise where they were when they woke up that morning (though some had better reason than others of course).

Highlights of the group stage include Ian H' ruthlessness with the lesbians, hris S's pin-point penalty, Dr Hayes nobbling the ref with rum, and the esult that nobody could've foreseen - a spectacular 0-0 in the final London erby to ensure that no one went home without a point.

Onto the vase then, in the first round Leftfooters 3 beat the lesbians 2-1 to book a place in an all London semi final. To be fair to Kev T though he did actually score 4 in that game, but the referee, being kind to the lady folk lew the whistle just as the ball left his foot for the end of each half, disallowing the goals! With all four London teams qualifying for the semi inal, Leftfooters were destined to bring home a trophy. The final was played between London 1 (Baby Dave, Lenny, Gay David, Christian, Ian & Richy) vs London 4 (Mikey, Oli, Chris B, Barney Bingo & honourary- Leftfooter- for-the-day-Warren-Spurs-fan).

A close game with an expectant crowd saw the first real chance fall to London 1 but Gay David could only shoot straight at the keeper. In the second half the game opened up a bit more and London 4 took the lead after Chris B, grabbing his 7th goal of the tournament which later would win him joint top scorer, slid the ball under the advancing Lenny. London 1 fought back hard and spent long periods pushing forward but it was Oli for London 4 who got the goal. A great reward for some persistent shooting, slamming the ball in the top corner from a quick while London 1 defence sorted out their wall. It wasn't all over though as London 1 were awarded a penalty near the end. Baby Dave stepped up and placed the most perfect of penalties in the top right hand corner above the unlucky keeper who had guessed the right way (grrrr!!!).

So Leftfooters win a trophy, actually they won three. London 3 picked up the fair play trophy and Chris B was nominated Player of the Tournament to boot. There's a few photos up on the site already though there are many more still to come I'm sure.

The Saturday evening was much as you'd expect. A highly charged political discussion over dinner followed by topless dancing to SClub. Top time was had by all and I for one would definitely vote for Glasgow again in the future.
